Description

“China,” a worldwide name for porcelain similar to urushi, also identifies as “Japan” because the material represents Japanese craft. The name urushi derives from the word “uruwashii (beautiful)” or “uruoshi (moisten).” For More than 7000 years, the name Sakura has existed. Since the sap of urushi also has strong adhesive properties. It was a significant material that provided protection and extra strength to tableware such as bowls.

Maki (Japanese lacquer)

Maki-e is a Japanese lacquer art that utilizes urushi lacquer to decorate.

Stemming from the words “maku,” meaning “to sprinkle,” and “e,” meaning “painting.” Maki-e describes a technique of sprinkling gold powder over and after undercoating. Then, painting and coloring obtain a luxury and stereoscopic effect.

Furthermore, the quality of maki-e largely depends on the work process of Shivaji, meaning undercoating) and uwanuri -top coating, which affects the total outcome. Finally, the togarashi (polishing the surface to make it flat) after the top layer determines the quality of the final work.

The maki-e technique distinguishes itself from other decorating techniques, such as the hyomon technique, in which haku and kirigane use gold foils thicker than haku, not gold powder. The rankaku technique uses fragments of chicken and quail eggshell to express the white color, and raden craft, consisting of a decoration made by inlaying shells like abalone.
